Abeles was one of three Israeli female gymnasts to compete at the 1960 Rome Games, the first time Israel sent a gymnastic team to the Olympics. The other two gymnasts were Miriam Kara and Ralli Ben-Yehuda.

Abeles was one of Israel's top gymnasts in the 1960s and was the country's top individual finisher at the 1962 World Championships. Ruth helped lead the Israeli team to 15th place while she finished in 67th place in the individual all-around with 71.698 points.
