In the 2000 Sydney Games, Podoprigora swam in the 200-meter breaststroke event for Austria and ranked 11th (2:14.20). In the 2004 Athens Games he swam in the fifth heat of the 100-meter breaststroke event and finished second (1:03.08) after a very slow start and failed to make the semis. Maxim swam in heat five of the 200-meter breaststroke on August 17 and placed fifth (2:14.31), thus qualifying for the semifinals. The native Ukrainian was a bit slower in the semi's (2:14.66), finished sixth in the second semi and failed to make the final.

Career Highlights:
Maxim is among the premier breaststroke swimmers in Europe. In 1998 he claimed third place in the SC (short course) European Championships 200-meter breaststroke event (2:10.09). He repeated his third place finish in 2000, this time in the LC (long course) European Championships (2:15.07). In 2001 he won silver in the LC World Championships for his performance in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:11.09), and the gold in the SC European Championships race (2:07.79). In 2002 Maxim ranked second in the SC European Championships 200-meter breaststroke event (2:09.87). Podoprigora won the 200-meter breaststroke event in both the 2002 SC World Cup (2:11.59) and the 2003 SC World Cup (2:07.46). The naturalized Austrian is also an accomplished 100-meter breaststroke and 50-meter breaststroke swimmer.
