At the 1952 Helsinki Games, Baran competed for the Finnish track team in 100-meter and 4x100-meter races. In the 100, he finished fourth in his preliminary heat with a time of 11.0 seconds, but failed to advance to the semifinals since only the top two finishers in each heat advanced (the second place finisher had a time of 10.9). In the 4x100-meter relay, Baran ran the anchor (final) leg in the preliminaries as Finland finished fourth in their heat in a time of 42.0, but missed advancing to semifinals by 0.2 seconds (the top three teams in each heat advanced).

Career Highlights:
The Finnish champion in the 100-meter in 1951, Baran competed a number of times in the Maccabiah Games in both Israel and Europe from 1953-1961. His best-ever 100-meter time was 10.8 seconds which he equaled many times, the final time at the 1960 European Maccabi Games at the age of 33.
