Newman, Jeff

Jeffrey Lynn Newman

Newman was a catcher in the majors (he also played the infield, and once pitched a shutout inning) with the Oakland A's and Boston Red Sox. Jeff's best season was 1979, when he was named an All-Star. A career .224 hitter who never hit higher than .239, Newman nonetheless played nine seasons in the majors and was a solid contributor. His knowledge of the game is so respected that he was coach and, briefly, manager of the Oakland A's.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. September 11, 1948

Career Highlights:
In 1976, Newman broke into the majors with the Oakland Athletics. After playing in 43 games that year, he steadily improved every year until 1979, when he was an All-Star with the A's. That season, he led the team with 22 home runs, 143 games, and 516 at-bats. He also drove in 71 runs, and scored 53. In 1981, the A's finished first in the Western Division and made the playoffs; Newman went 0-8 as they defeated the Kansas City Royals in the AL Division Series, then lost to the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Following the 1982 season, Jeff was traded to the Boston Red Sox, and played sparingly for two seasons before retiring in 1984. After his playing days, Newman became the A's bullpen coach. In 1986, he managed the club for 10 games (2-8) after Jackie Moore was fired and before Tony LaRussa was hired.

Career Dates:
Newman played for the Oakland A's, 1976-82, and the Boston Red Sox, 1982-84.

Position:
Primarily a catcher, he filled in regularly at first base and as a Designated Hitter. He played third in 10 games, played once at second base and even pitched an inning (he gave up a hit, but no runs).
