Before pitching for the Kansas City A's, Davis was a star hurler for Yale (class of 1955). His father was Jewish and his non-Jewish mother was a former Ziegfield Follies girl.

Bob pitched in parts of two seasons for the Kansas City Athletics. In 1958, he appeared in 8 games (he started 4), but went 0-4 with a 7.86 ERA. Two years later, he appeared in 21 games (all as a reliever) and dropped his ERA to 3.66; he had one save, but figured in no decisions.
