Greenberg, Adam

Adam Daniel Greenberg

Greenberg, a speedy outfielder, was called up to the Chicago Cubs from AA on Thursday, July 7, 2005. In his first major league at-bat -- July 9 against the Florida Marlins -- Greenberg was hit in the head by the first pitch he faced and had to leave the game. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said, "What a way to start your career. I hope he's OK. I'm sure he'll never forget that opening at-bat." Greenberg's hitting mechanics were not the same after the incident. At the start of the 2007 season, he was trying to catch on again in the Kansas City Royals system.

In an article on mlb.com, Greenberg explains that many fans ask whether his grandfather was the great Hank Greenberg. According to the article, Adam "will reply 'yes,' and then he'll pause before adding, 'But not the one you're looking for.'" Adam's grandfather was named Abraham Hank Greenberg, but was no relation to the Hall of Fame first baseman. The article goes on to explain that Adam's Jewish life in Connecticut was quite different than what he experienced in North Carolina, where he attended college. He explained, "There's just not very many Jewish people down there. Ninety percent of the team had never met a Jewish person. People would want to talk to me about it. Yes, comments would be made, but uneducated people are going to make uneducated comments. But it was never a detriment."
