b. December 27, 1917

Career Highlights:
A boyhood friend of future Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto, Karpel played baseball at Richmond High School in Queens, New York. In 1936, both Karpel and Rizzuto were playing for a semi-pro team when a New York Yankee scout saw them play and signed them to contracts. For the next six years, Herb pitched in the minors and in 1942, while playing with Kansas City in the American Association, he went 12-1. He pitched a complete game victory in the league championship.

Following the 1942 season, Karpel entered the U.S. Army and served in the infantry during World War II. Awarded the Bronze Star, he was released from the army in 1945 and resumed his baseball career. At the start of the 1946 season, Karpel joined the Yankees and made his major league debut on opening day. Against the Washington Senators, Herb entered the game with two outs in the top of the eighth and retired the only batter he faced. Five days later, he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two runs. He was sent to the minors soon after and never returned to the majors.
