Stephen Allan Hertz

Hertz played in five games for the Houston Colt .45's, who later became the Astros, in 1964. One of Steve's teammates was Jewish reliever Larry Yellen. For the last 17 years, he has been the head baseball coach at Miami Dade Community Coach.

Career Highlights:
Born in Ohio, Hertz moved to Miami as a young child with his family. He played baseball in high school and was named All-City in 1962 and 1963 and All-State in 1963. After graduating, Steve signed with the Houston Colt .45s, an expansion team -- a clause in the contract allowed him to attend the University of Miami in the off-season. In 1964, he made his major league debut with the Colt .45s and appeared in five games during the season. While Hertz was hitless in his brief career (he went 0-4, with three strikeouts), he did score two runs.

After being sent down during the 1964 season, Hertz remained in the minor leagues for the next five years. He retired from baseball and became a baseball coach and teacher in Miami. Hertz led Coral Park High School to the state title in 1978 and South Ridge High School to the championship game in 1984. Two years later, he became the head coach at Miami Dade Community College. He has led the school to the Southern Conference championship in 1986, 1987, 1995, and 1996 -- they were runners-up in 1988, 1991-1994, and 1997.
