Edward James Zosky

Zosky, who has a Jewish mother, retired from baseball in March 2001. A promising shortstop prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays in the early 1990s, elbow problems and a lack of offense ended his hopes of stardom. He played in 44 career major league games for the Toronto Blue Jays, Florida Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, and Houston Astros, with a career .160 batting average.

Career Highlights:
Zosky was drafted out of high school by the New York Mets in the 1986 free-agent draft, but decided to attend college rather than turn professional. After a marvelous college career at Fresno State, where he was Sporting News and Baseball America All-America after hitting .370 his final year, Zosky was selected in the first round (19th overall) of the 1989 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. A top prospect, Zosky was considered "the next big thing" for the Blue Jays, and was regarded as their shortstop of the future. After two seasons in the minors, Eddie finally broke into the majors in 1991, playing in 18 games but hitting only .148.

After another brief stint with the Jays in 1992, Zosky injured his elbow in 1993. His future with the Jays dimmed after they drafted shortstop Alex Gonzalez. He remained in the Jays organization (but did not return to the majors) until 1995, when he was traded to the Florida Marlins. That season, he split time between the minors and the Marlins, appearing in 6 games and going 1-5 for Florida. He then played in the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, and St. Louis Cardinals farm systems, but did not reappear in the majors until 1999, when he played 8 games for the Milwaukee Brewers. Zosky started the 2000 campaign playing for the AAA Nashville Sounds of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. After being released, Eddie joined the Houston organization, competing for New Orleans in the PCL. He hit .232 during his season there. The Astros brought him to the majors in August. He played for Houston, but became a free agent at the end of the season, then retired in March 2001.
