Phillip M. Farbman

In the 1940s, Farbman was a star basketball player at City College of New York (CCNY) before playing one season in the NBA. He is a member of the CCNY Athletic Hall of Fame.

Career Highlights:
Farbman played at CCNY in the 1940s, and helped lead City to a 14-4 record in 1946. The following year, City College was one of the best teams in the nation with a 16-4 regular season record and a berth in the NCAA tournament. In the first round, the Beavers fell behind Wisconsin 26-10 in the first half, but came back to win the game, 70-56. In the semifinal, they lost to Holy Cross (led by Bob Cousy), 60-45. Holy Cross eventually won the tournament, the first Eastern team to do so. In the consolation game, City lost to Texas, 54-50. Farbman played in all three tournament games and averaged 2.7 points per game. In 1948, CCNY remained among the country's elite teams as they finished 18-3, but did not play in a postseason tournament.

After graduating, Farbman was the first-round draft pick in the 1948 NBA Draft, selected by the Philadelphia Warriors. The NBA began the previous year, and Farbman played only one season in the new league. In 1948-49, he began the season with the Warriors before being sent to the Boston Celtics which finished 25-35 and did not make the playoffs. Farbman played in 48 games and averaged 3.2 points per game for the Warriors and Celtics.
