Career Highlights:
Playing guard, Rubenstein was a marvelous contribution to the Cincinnati squad in the late 1940s. In 1947, he was a member of the Bearcats which played in the newly-formed Mid-American Conference. Cincinnati finished the season with a record of 17-9 (6-2 in conference) and Al was named first team All-Conference. In 1948, the Bearcats won the conference title by finishing 17-7 (7-2 in conference).

In 1949, Rubenstein was named first team All-(MAC) Mid-American Conference and was sixth in the league in scoring with 11.9 points per game. He helped lead the team to a 23-5 record and a No. 13 ranking. It was the first 20-win season in school history and the first to be ranked. Despite scoring 67.5 points per game (the highest in school history), and winning the MAC (9-1 conference record), the Bearcats were not invited to compete in either the NCAA tournament or the NIT. The 1949 team is considered one of Cincinnati's greatest, and Bearcat fans are still rankled by this oversight.
