Coached by the legendary Red Sarachek, Blumenreich was a great player for Yeshiva University in the 1950s. He led them to records of 13-8 in 1955, 16-2 in 1956, and 12-7 in 1957, the same year the senior was named All-America honorable mention. Irwin finished his career with 1,360 points, breaking the school record previously held by Marvin Hershkowitz.
