Chubin, Steve

Steven Chubin

Chubin played for four different franchises in a single season, which ties him for the most in ABA/NBA history. Steve, however, is the only player to have done it in two different seasons. During the 1968-69 season, he played for Los Angeles, Minnesota, Indiana and New York in a total of 77 games. In the 1969-70 season, Steve played for New York, Pittsburgh, Indiana and Kentucky in 72 games.

Career Highlights:
A member of the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame, Chubin was an outstanding player in the mid-1960s and led the Rams to a berth in the NCAA tournament. In 1963, Steve was named All-America honorable mention while leading his squad to a record of 15-11. In 1964, Chubin was again named All-America honorable mention and the Rams compiled a 19-8 mark. After being forced to miss the 1965 season because he was academically ineligible, Chubin had another strong season for Rhode Island.

In 1966, he helped lead the Rams to a 20-7 record, the Yankee Conference title, and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Chubin scored 23 points in their 95-65 first round loss to Davidson. When he graduated, Steve was the Rams' all-time leading scorer with 2,154 points (21.9 average); it is a record he still holds. In 1966, Chubin was selected in the third round (23rd overall) by the San Francisco Warriors in the NBA Draft. Steve did not play in the NBA, however; instead, he chose to play in Italy during the 1966-67 season for the Simmenthal Company (Milan) team, which placed second in the International Games.

In 1967-68, Chubin signed with the Anaheim Amigos of the NBA's rival league, the newly-formed ABA. On October 4, 1967, the Amigos played in the ABA's inaugural game, losing to Oakland 134-129. That year, Steve was the Amigos' best and most popular player. He led the team in scoring average (18.2 points per game), and assists (4.7 per game). He also grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game, and finished with career highs in all three categories! Chubin ended the season third in the league in assists per game (Larry Brown finished first) and tenth in free throw percentage (.810).

Despite Steve's strong play, the Amigos finished the regular season with a record of 25-53 and missed the playoffs. The Amigos was one of the worst teams in the ABA that first season, and averaged only 1,300 fans per game. Not only that, the franchise was notoriously cheap. One of the players recalled that the players were supposed to furnish their own gear, and were only issued one pair of game socks that were supposed to last the entire year! The Amigos moved to Los Angeles after the season and became the Los Angeles Stars.

Over the next two seasons, Chubin played for 7 different teams, but remained a solid contributor to all of them. He finished the 1969-70 season with the Kentucky Colonels after being traded by the Indiana Pacers. Chubin and the Colonels lost to the Pacers in the Eastern Division Finals, 4-1. Indiana was the eventual ABA champion that year. Steve retired following the season after playing in 226 career ABA games and averaging 12.8 points per game.
