Neuman, Jeff

Jeffrey L. Neuman

A three-time first team All-Ivy League selection in the 1960s, Neuman is a member of the University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame. During his career at Penn, Neuman led the Quakers in free throw shooting for three consecutive seasons, and graduated with 1,187 career points, which is currently 20th on the all-time Penn list. In 1966, his senior year, Neuman received the Cane Award, the school's third most prestigious award for senior men.

Neuman's teammate at Penn, Stan Pawlak said, "Jeff was a point guard who was ahead of his time. The things he did in 1966 are the things NBA and college coaches absolutely look for in their lead guard today. He played with a flair...I could depend on getting the ball in the right place, exactly when I wanted it, every time. His quickness was superb and he wanted to win...never a doubt about him being able to take care of the ball and his foul shooting in the clutch won us many games."

Career Highlights:
Neuman played at the University of Pennsylvania in the mid-1960s, and is still considered one of the greatest basketball players in school history. In 1964, Jeff was named first team All-Ivy League and Penn finished in third place with a 10-4 record (14-10 overall). The following year (1965), Neuman was named the team's Most Inspirational Player, and repeated as first team All-Ivy League. Named All-Big 5 (Philadelphia), Neuman helped Penn finish third in the conference at 10-4 (15-10).

In 1966, Neuman was Penn's captain and was named team MVP as the Quakers' second-leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points per game overall and 20.4 in Ivy League games (fourth in the conference). Ranked seventh in the nation in free throw accuracy with an 86.6% success rate, Neuman was named first-team All-Ivy League, first-team All-Big 5 (Philadelphia), Jewish All-America, and UPI All-America honorable mention.

He also led the Quakers, who were ranked No. 7 in the nation in scoring defense (62.7), to a 12-2 conference record (19-6 overall) and their first-ever official Ivy League Championship. The celebration over their league title was short-lived, however. The Ivy League boycotted the NCAA tournament on academic standard principles.

Neuman was selected in the sixth round (55th pick overall) of the NBA draft in 1966 by the Baltimore Bullets, but never played in the NBA. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1984 and was a second-team selection to the Ivy League 25th Anniversary Basketball Team. On November 11, 2000, Neuman was inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame.
