UNC finished the 1966 season 16-11 (8-6 in conference), and again missed the postseason.

In 1967, Mirken's senior season, the Tar Heels had a terrific team. They finished the season ranked No. 3 by UPI (No. 4 AP) with a record of 24-4. UNC won the ACC regular season (12-2) and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by winning the ACC tournament. In their trip to the NCAA, the Tar Heels played in the Final Four, but finished in fourth after losing both the National Semifinal and the Consolation Game.
