Gellert was a three-year starter at guard for Harvard University, and served as the team's captain in 2001-02. The school's all-time leader in steals, he led the Ivy League in that category for three consecutive seasons.

Career Highlights:
Gellert was a three-sport star (basketball, baseball, and football) and an an All-State selection while at Newtown High School in Connecticut. Named the 1997-98 State Basketball Player of the Year by the Connecticut Post, Gellert attended Harvard University and was one of the Ivy League's top freshman in 1998-99. That year, he appeared in all 26 games (starting in six); Harvard finished 13-13 (7-7, fourth in conference). Gellert played well and was second on the team in assists (50) and steals (33).

As a sophomore in 1999-2000, Gellert developed into one of the best defensive players in the conference. He registered a league-high 74 steals, which also set a new school record, and his 2.7 steals per game was 20th in the country. Harvard again had a 7-7 record in conference (third place), but only had an overall record of 12-15.

In 2000-01, Gellert repeated as the Ivy League's steal leader (72) and finished eighth in the country with 2.8 steals per game. He also set the school record for consecutive games with at least one steal (47). During conference play, Andrew averaged 8.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game (eighth in the Ivy League). Harvard finished the season with a 7-7 conference record for the third consecutive year (fourth place) and was 14-12 overall.

Gellert's senior year was a personal success, even if Harvard again finished 7-7 in conference (fifth place) and 14-12 overall. The team captain, he was also named Harvard's MVP and All-Academic Ivy League. That year, Gellert led the conference in steals for the third straight season and set the school record for career steals (244). The league leader in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.57:1), Gellert was selected to play in the 2001 Maccabiah Games prior to the season. He was also a two-time Jewish Sports Review first team All-America.
