Cohen, Fred

Cohen was a forward at Temple University in the 1950s and still holds the NCAA tournament record for rebounds in a single game with 34 (set in 1956). After his basketball career, Cohen became a lawyer and was made the federal court-appointed Monitor overseeing mental health care in Ohio's prisons.

Career Highlights:
A member of the Temple University Owls in the mid-1950s, Cohen was coached by Hall of Famer Harry Litwack. As a senior center in 1956, Cohen helped the Owls finished with a regular season record of 23-3 and a No. 14 national ranking by UPI (No. 15 AP).

Temple received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and after a first-round victory over Holy Cross (74-72), the Owls played Connecticut in the East Region semifinal. During the game, a 65-59 Temple victory, Cohen grabbed an astounding 34 rebounds, setting an NCAA tournament record that still stands.

In the East Region final, Temple defeated Canisius, 60-58, to reach the school's first Final Four competition. In the National Semifinals, they lost to Iowa, but then rebounded to capture the consolation game with a 90-81 win over SMU to take third place in the tournament. Cohen played in all five games for the Owls and averaged 7.2 points per game.

After graduating from Temple, Cohen attended Yale Law School. He went on to teach law at many universities, including Denver, Texas, Iowa, Arizona, and NYU. A Professor Emeritus at SUNY-Albany, he has specialized in sex offender issues and is the editor of the Criminal Law Bulletin.
