Louis Spindell

A member of the CCNY Athletic Hall of Fame, Spindell played at City College of New York in the late 1920s. He then played professionally in the (ABL) American Basketball League, one of the top professional leagues in the 1930s. As a member of the Trenton Tigers, a team that made no substitutions, Spindell won 99 of 100 games during a two year span.

Career Highlights:
In the late 1920s, Spindell played at CCNY under the great Nat Holman. In 1928, his sophomore season, he joined senior captain Hick Rubenstein and junior Sam Liss in the starting line-up. The Beavers lost three of their first four games but then won 10 of their next 11, including the season finale against rival NYU (New York University), 29-26 -- Spindell scored four points in the game. The Beavers finished the season with a record of 11-4.

The following year, Spindell and Liss returned as starters and were joined by Artie Musicant. City College won six of their first seven games, including a 41-17 defeat of Washington & Jefferson -- Spindell scored a game-high nine points. In the middle of the season, however, they lost three of five games, and then lost the season finale to NYU, 40-24 (Spindell was held to three points. They finished 9-5.

As a senior in 1930, Spindell was the team captain and played forward. An excellent offensive player, he was also considered the team's top defender. He helped City College win their first eight games of the season before losing to close battles to New York rivals St. John's and Manhattan. They then proceeded to win their next four games leading into the season finale with NYU. Spindell scored two points in the game, but the Beavers lost, 37-33. They finished 12-3 on the season and Spindell was named first team All-Metropolitan. Following the season, his coach Nat Holman, named Lou to his All-time All-CCNY team.
