Newman, Harry "Doc"

In the 1920s, Newman was a member of the Philadelphia Sphas, a barnstorming team founded by Eddie Gottlieb, Hughie Black, and Chicky Passon in the late 1910s. Made up of primarily Jewish players, the Sphas were one of the greatest early professional teams. The nickname stood for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association.

Career Highlights:
In 1925-26, as part of a special series of games, the Sphas defeated both the Original Celtics and the New York Rens (both full teams have been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame) and were proclaimed world champions. The Sphas have been inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
