In 1918, O'Leary fought future world lightweight champ Rocky Kanses in a bout in Philadelphia; he was knocked out in the fifth-round. The following year, O'Leary battled featherweight title-holder Johnny Kilbane in a non-title bout that went the full six-rounds and ended in a no decision. Later that year, he had a rematch with Kansas that also ended in a six-round no decision.
