Baer, Buddy : Jews In Sports @ Virtual Museum

Baer, Buddy

The 6'6", 245-pound Baer followed his older brother, Max, into the ring. In May 1941, Buddy faced Joe Louis for the world heavyweight title and knocked Louis through the ropes in the 1st round. Later in the fight, however, Baer failed to answer the bell, claiming that Louis had hit him after bell at the end of the 6th round and demanded he be awarded the fight on a foul. Instead, Baer was disqualified. In January 1942, the two had a re-match for the heavyweight title, and Louis knocked out Baer in the first round, and Buddy never fought again. An incomplete record attributed him with 46 wins (41 knock-outs) and 7 losses.
