Mansfield's professional boxing career began in England in the early 1900s and he fought 'Peerless' Jim Driscoll six times between 1902-1908 (two bouts ended in no decisions and Mansfield lost the other four). In February 1904, he also fought former world featherweight champion George Dixon to a 20-round draw. After travelling to the U.S. in the mid-1900s, Mansfield fought Jack Blackburn in a six-round no decision in December 1908. The following January, he faced welterweight champ Harry Lewis in Lewis' hometown of Philadelphia and the non-title bout ended in a six-round no decision. Mansfield and Lewis would fight five more times over the next three years with three no-decisions; Lewis won the other two fights on decisions, and the final fight, in March 1912, took place in England. In the meantime, Mansfield remained in the U.S. until 1911 and fought future middleweight champion Frank Klaus three times (2 no decisions and a Mansfield victory), and Hall of Famer Jack Dillon once (a no decision in 1911).
