Born in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, Leonard began his career as a lightweight in 1930. In August, he fought Frankie Carlton at Dexter Park (New York) and was knocked out 37 seconds into the second-round. A few months later, Leonard drew Augustine Perez in a four-round bout. In November 1933, he knocked out Fred Sullanti in the first-round at the Broadway Arena in Brooklyn.
