Lazer, Roy

A member of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame, Lazer was one of the greatest Jewish heavyweights in boxing history. During his career, which he termed "ten beautiful years," he fought some of the best boxers in the business, including Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott, and "Two Ton" Tony Galento.

Career Highlights:
Born in New Jersey, Lazer began his professional boxing career at the age of 18. By the early 1930s, he was fighting some of the top contenders in the heavyweight class. In November 1932, he fought Abie Bain and won a ten-round decision. Then, in April 1935, he fought the future heavyweight champion, Joe Louis in Chicago and was knocked out in the third-round.

After the Louis fight, Lazer went to the United Kingdom and fought a number of bouts in England and Scotland. He returned to the U.S. in late 1936 and fought "Two Ton" Tony Galento in November of that year. The bout went six-rounds, but Roy was knocked out by Galento. In June 1938, Lazer fought and defeated Jersey Joe Walcott in an eight-round decision. He continued to fight until 1940 and retired with over 100 bouts during his career.

During World War II, Lazer served in the U.S. Army and fought in Europe. Wounded in 1944, he remained behind the lines and staged boxing bouts in rest camps for American servicemen.
