Born in Philadelphia, Rubin began his professional career in the mid-1930s. In August 1936, he fought Midget Mexico, the future Mexican middleweight champion, and knocked out his opponent in the eighth-round. The following month, he fought top welterweight contender, Bobby Pacho (who would fight champ Henry Armstrong for the world title twice in 1939), but lost an eight round decision.
