A lightweight out of New York City, Cross began his professional career in the early 1910s. He fought a boxer named Kid Bolt in January 1910 and the bout, which took place in Brooklyn, ended in a no decision. Cross continued to fight exclusively in the New York area until March 1913 when he went to New Orleans, the hometown of his opponent, Johnny "Young" Denny. The bout ended in a ten-round draw. Two months later, Cross was back on the East Coast and fought future lightweight contender George "Young" Erne in Philadelphia. The bout ended in a no decision, but Phil won the newspaper decision.
