A bantamweight out of Brooklyn, Bienfeld made his professional debut in the early 1920s. After a series of fights in the New York City area, Sammy fought "Corporal" Izzy Schwartz, the future world flyweight champion, in July 1923 and won a ten-round decision. Two months later, Bienfeld and Schwartz fought a rematch that ended in a six-round draw. Bienfeld fought for a number of years, but his only notable opponent during this time was Black Bill, the Cuban flyweight champion. Sammy lost a ten-round decision to the Cuban title-holder.
