Career Highlights:
A lightweight from New York, Kid Black began his career in the early 1900s, but it was not until 1911 that he fought top competition. That year, he faced the great Johnny Dundee (early in Dundee's career) twice -- both bouts ended in ten-round no decisions. Later in 1911, Kid Black fought top featherweight and junior lightweight contender George "K.O." Chaney to a no decision.

In 1914, Kid Black fought the legendary lightweight champion, Benny Leonard in a bout that ended in a no decision. Four years later, he had a rematch with Chaney and lost a ten-round decision. In October 1919, he fought future world featherweight champion Louis "Kid" Kaplan in a no-decision bout (it was one of Kaplan's first pro fights). In May 1921, Kid Black fought Panama Joe Gans, the Colored world middleweight champion (few African-American boxers were given title shots at this time), and lost an eight-round decision.
