Career Highlights:
Born in New Rochelle, Cohen was one of eight children (five brothers and two sisters). A swimmer and baseball player in high school, Cohen began boxing in Korea, where he was stationed with the 21st Airborne Infantry. In 1957, he captured the Korean Forces lightweight championship and was awarded a trophy as the best amateur in the tournament. Upon his return to civilian life, Cohen boxed as an amateur and reached the semifinals of the Golden Gloves in both 1957 and 1958.

In 1958, Cohen turned professional and had his first fight in Montreal. A southpaw (lefty), he won 20 of his first 25 fights through the middle of 1960. In August of that year, he made his debut at Madison Square Garden against Canadian welterweight champion Gale Kerwin and was knocked out in the second round. The following year, he lost a ten-round decision to Stefan Redl, the former New Jersey State welterweight champion. Cohen retired from the ring in 1961.
