A boxer out of Philadelphia, Conway began boxing in the mid-1920s, mostly in the Newark, New Jersey area. In August 1926, he fought Russie LeRoy to a ten-round no decision at Laurel Garden. Four months later, the two fighters had a rematch, which also ended in a ten-round no decision. In April 1927, Conway fought future world middleweight champion Vince Dundee to a ten-round no decision.
