Born in South Carolina, Davenport fought all over the East during his professional career. According to incomplete records compiled by www.boxrec.com, he began fighting in the New York City area in the mid-1930s. Eldred fought decent, but not outstanding opponents in New York, but then in January 1937, he went to Providence, Rhode Island and fought Ralph Zannelli, a top welterweight contender -- Davenport lost an eight-round decision. The two fighters had a rematch two months later in Boston and Eldred again lost an eight-round decision.
