Herman Davis

A member of the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, Davis proudly wore a Magen David on his trunks while fighting professionally as a welterweight from 1928-35. Jackie was a top contender in 1932-33.

Career Highlights:
As an amateur in 1927, the year before he turned pro, Davis fought Barney Ross for the Chicago Golden Gloves title. Davis also faced Ross as a professional twice -- in 1930, they fought to a four-round no decision, and in 1931, Davis lost a six-round decision.

In both 1932 and 1933, The Ring Magazine ranked Davis among the top ten in the welterweight division; in October 1933, Jackie defeated former lightweight champion Sammy Mandell in a 10-round decision. The following year, Davis was knocked out in the fourth round by future world champion Lou Ambers.

Jackie retired in 1935, and became a referee until 1968; he also wrote a boxing column for the Cleveland News and Press.
