Sidney Kaplan

Kaplan was a professional football player in the NFL and AFL (American Football League) in the 1920s.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. November 16, 1899 - d. December 28, 1989

Career Highlights:
After playing his college ball at Hamline College in Minnesota, Kaplan played one season in the NFL. In 1923, he played in eight games for the Minneapolis Marines, which finished the season with a record of 2-5-2, thirteenth in the league.

In 1926, Kaplan returned to professional football, this time in the AFL. He played for the Rock Island Independents in 1926, who finished seventh in the league with a record of 2-5-1.

The AFL was started by Red Grange's agent so that the Galloping Ghost could play in New York; the New York Giants had exclusive territorial rights in the NFL and would not allow another team to play in the area. Despite Grange's popularity, the league (in that incarnation), folded after only two seasons because the owners could not pay the players' salaries.

Kaplan played at Hamline College, and later in the NFL with the Minneapolis Marines in 1923. He then played in the AFL with the Rock Island Independents in 1926.
