James Julius Levey

Levey was a professional athlete in two sports, baseball and football. He played in the NFL in the mid-1930s.

Career Highlights:
An outstanding athlete, Levey dropped out of high school and played baseball for a semi-pro team. To increase his strength, he began working at an iron mill. In 1923, when he was still only a teenager, Jim joined the U.S. Marines. While with the Marines, he played on his post's football, basketball, and baseball teams.

In 1926, Levey played on the All-Marine team that went 10-3-0 against college teams. He re-enlisted in 1927 and began playing professional baseball after signing a contract with the St. Louis Browns in 1929. Jim played professional baseball until 1933.

In 1934, Levey joined the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) in the team's second year of existence. That season, Levey appeared in only one game as the Pirates had a record of 2-10-0 and were outscored 51-206.

The following year, Levey had his best season in the NFL when he played in eight games, rushed 42 times for 61 yards, and had seven receptions for 112 yards;-he scored all four career touchdowns that year. The Pirates finished the season with a record of 4-8-0. Levey played one more season in the NFL and the Pirates finished 6-6-0 in 1936. Jim played in 13 career NFL games for Pittsburgh.
