Edwin Isaac Hyneman

One of the earliest Jewish football players, Hyneman played in the first indoor game in 1887. According to his obituary in the New York Times, Hyneman was "widely known as a sportsman, he was a member of the Racquet Club...held several offices in the club." Along with being a member of the football team, Hyneman was also a pitcher on the baseball team at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1903, Hyneman became treasurer and part-owner of the Philadelphia Phillies.

b. February 7, 1869 - d. August 3, 1945

Career Highlights:
In 1887, playing for Penn, Hyneman participated in what is said to be first game ever played on an indoor gridiron. The game was played against Rutgers in New York's Madison Square Garden. Penn won the match, 13-7.

Hyneman played at the University of Pennsylvania from 1887-1888.
