Jacobson, Samuel

Jacobson was the earliest known Jewish professional football player and coach, and is credited with a major role in the establishment of football at Syracuse University.

While the origins of pro football are clouded, Jacobson organized a team in Syracuse in the late 1880s called the Syracuse Athletic Association, although they played against amateurs. Jacobson played fullback for the team, and also coached the early Syracuse University team.
