Robert E. Gurwitz

Gurwitz was a halfback for the University of Texas in the late 1950s, and played in the 1960 Cotton Bowl for the Longhorns. In the contest, Texas, ranked No. 4 in the nation, played the No. 1 ranked Syracuse Orangemen for the national championship. Gurwitz carried the ball six times for nine yards and had one reception for seven yards in Texas' 23-14 loss.

Career Highlights:
Gurwitz played three seasons of varsity football at Texas. As a sophomore in 1958, Bobby and the Longhorns finished the season with an overall record of 7-3 (3-3 in the Southwest Conference). The following year, they won their first eight games of the season before losing to Texas Christian University. Nevertheless, the Longhorns won the SWC in the regular season and were ranked No. 4 in the country as they entered the Cotton Bowl against Syracuse on January 1, 1960. Texas lost to the eventual national champions by a score of 23-14.

In 1960, Gurwitz's senior season, Texas won only three of their first six games, but posted victories in their final four regular season games and played in the Bluebonnet Bowl against No. 9 Alabama. The game ended in a 3-3 tie as Gurwitz rushed three times for nine yards. Texas finished the season with a record of 7-3-1 and ranked No. 17 in the UPI poll.
