A sophomore punter at the University of Maryland, Podlesh has continued his outstanding career after being named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award as the nation's top punter in 2003. Maryland finished the season with a record of 5-6; Podlesh played in every game and punted 63 times with an excellent 43.7 yards-per-punt average.

A three-year letterwinner at Pittsford Sutherland High School, Podlesh was named all-state as a senior; that year, he also played fullback and linebacker. After redshirting at Maryland in 2002, Podlesh was outstanding in 2003 during his freshman season. That year, Maryland finished the regular season with a record of 9-3 and then defeated West Virginia in the Gator Bowl; they finished the year ranked No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 20 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. Podlesh played in all 13 games and punted 53 times with a 42.3 yards-per-punt average (fifth-best single-season mark in school history and best ever by a freshman).
