Oppleman, Issy

Isadore P. Oppleman

A member of the Jewish fraternity ZBT (Zeta Beta Tau), Oppleman was a two-sport star at the University of Virginia, playing on both the football and basketball teams in the early 1920s. In 1929, he was named to the All-time ZBT football team along with such greats as Joe Alexander and Harry Kallet. After his collegiate career, Oppleman was heavily involved in sports in his hometown of Lynchburg and became the Sports Chairman of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce.

Career Highlights:
Besides being a member of the basketball team, he captained the freshman team after attending Augusta Military Academy. Oppleman then moved up to the varsity football team and lettered two seasons. In the opening game of the 1920 season, Oppleman, who started at quarterback, helped lead Virginia to a 27-0 victory over William & Mary, scoring a touchdown in the contest. That year, Virginia finished with a record of 5-2-2.

The following year, Oppleman also played end and halfback as the Cavaliers finished with a record of 5-4 (they won their first five games and then dropped their final four). He was also a member of the team in 1922, but an injury suffered in a mid-season game against Johns Hopkins caused him to miss the final four games of the season. Virginia had a record of 4-4-1 that year.
