Grossman, Nat

A member of the Jewish fraternity Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) at New York University (NYU) in the early 1930s, Grossman was a star back for the varsity football team and was named All-East honorable mention as a junior in 1931. He was the younger brother of Rutgers star Jack Grossman.

Career Highlights:
After a terrific career at James Madison High School in Brooklyn, Grossman attended NYU and joined the varsity as a sophomore in 1931. In his first game, a 65-0 victory over Hobart, Grossman scored three touchdowns as the Violets outgained their opponents, 265-23. In the middle of the season, Grossman and his older brother, senior All-America back Jack Grossman faced each other on the field when NYU and Rutgers played. Early in the contest, Nat recovered a fumble of Jack's and then scored on the ensuing drive on a 20-yard run - he later threw a touchdown pass as NYU won the game, 27-7. That season, Grossman scored seven touchdowns and added one extra point for a total of 43 points (second on the team and 30th in the East). NYU finished with a record of 6-3-1 and outscored their opponents, 212-47.

With expectations high entering his junior season, Grossman hurt his knee in a pre-season scrimmage and missed a few weeks early in the year. He eventually returned to the team as NYU finished the year with a record of 5-3-0. In his senior season, Grossman and NYU struggled and only finished with a record of 2-4-1.
