Firstenberg, Meyer

A member of the Jewish fraternity Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) at New York University (NYU) in the early 1930s, Firstenberg was a two-year starter at guard for the varsity football team and was named All-America honorable mention as a senior in 1932. A member of the NYU lacrosse team, Firstenberg served as an assistant coach for NYU after graduating - he was also a lead scout.

Career Highlights:
Firstenberg joined the NYU varsity as a sophomore in 1930 and played primarily as a reserve as the Violets finished with a record of 7-3-0. The following year, Firstenberg started on the offensive line and became one of the team's top players. During the season, he was injured in a 7-6 loss to Georgia and NYU feared he would be lost for the season. The New York Times reported the following week, however, that, "the unexpected return of...Firstenberg, brilliant guard...bolstered the spirit of the NYU football team." He eventually returned to the starting line-up as NYU finished the season with a record of 6-3-1 (outscoring the opposition, 212-47). At the conclusion of the season, the New York University Daily News named Firstenberg to the All-Meehan team, which was made up of players under coach Chick Meehan. In Firstenberg's senior season, he continued his excellent play as NYU had a record of 5-3-0.
