Winograd, a defenseman, was an All-America at Colorado College before playing professionally in the WHA (World Hockey Association).

Career Highlights:
A three-year star at Colorado College, Winograd was named first team NCAA All-America and first team WCHA (Western College Hockey Association) as a senior in 1971-72. That year, he played in 32 games and scored 56 points (18 goals and 38 assists). Selected in 1970 by the St. Louis Blues in the ninth round (108th overall) of the NHL Draft.

Although Winograd did not play in the NHL, he did play three seasons in the WHA (World Hockey Association), which seriously challenged the supremacy of the NHL. Founded in the summer of 1971, the WHA made big news when the Winnipeg Jets signed Bobby Hull to a one million dollar contract. The two leagues eventually merged in 1979.

Winograd first played in the inaugural season of the WHA in 1972-73 with the New York Raiders. He played in 52 games and had 12 assists as the Raiders finished in last place in the Eastern Division with a record of 33-43-2. He played the following season with the New York Golden Blades/Jersey Knights and appeared in seven games, scoring one goal. Winograd made one final appearance in the WHA in 1976-77 with the San Diego Mariners, playing in one game.
