Israel played two seasons at Harvard University, splitting time at goalie with Emmet 'Tripp' Tracy in 1992-93 and 1993-94. The Crimson played in the NCAA tournament both seasons, reaching the semifinals in 1994 and finishing in third place. In 1993, Israel was selected by Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round (166th overall) of the NHL Draft. While he never played a game in the NHL, he was on the team's roster during the 1995-96 season. Israel played professionally in the minors in until the mid-1990s.
