In 1967, Markus was the nation's first-ever recipient of the 'Hermann' Award as the nation's most outstanding player. He was among LIU's (Long Island University) inaugural class of 11 inductees in their Athletics Hall of Fame (established in 2000).

A striker (forward), Markus played soccer at Long Island University in the 1960s. A two-time All-American, he scored an impressive 78 goals in his three-year varsity career (1965-67). Markus led the Blackbirds to three consecutive NCAA appearances in his three years at LIU. His 78 career goals is a record that is tied for tenth all-time in NCAA history.
