Nickolsburger, Reszo

Rudolph Nickolsburger

Nickolsburger, a winger and center forward, played for Hakoah-Vienna in the 1920s and was a member of the squad in 1927 when they toured the U.S. (Hakoah-Vienna has been inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame). Reszo went on to play in the United States for a number of years. While in the American Soccer League, he appeared in 74 games and scored 29 goals.

Career Highlights:
Born in Hungary, Nickolsburger began his soccer career there with the club team, FTC. In 1920, he also played one game for the Hungarian National team against Austria. In the mid-1920s, Nickolsburger played in Italy and then moved to Austria to join the world famous Hakoah-Vienna soccer club. In 1927, he played with Hakoah when they toured the United States. After the tour, Nickolsburger remained in the U.S.

In 1928-29, Nickolsburger joined the New York Hakoah, a team organized of former Hakoah-Vienna players. They played in the newly-formed Eastern Soccer League and that year, won the U.S. Open Cup, considered the national championship. The following year, the ESL merged with the American Soccer League and the New York Hakoah was re-named the Hakoah All-Stars after it merged with the Brooklyn Hakoah of the ASL.

Nickolsburger played the 1929-30 season with the Hakoah All-Stars, scored five goals in 25 league games; the team finished in third place in the ASL. The following year, they wound up in third place again. Nickolsburger played in 21 games and scored seven goals (second on the team). In 1931, the season was split into two halves, the spring and fall, and Hakoah finished sixth in the spring and fourth in the fall. Nickolsburger played both halves and scored six goals in 16 games in the spring and 12 goals (sixth in the ASL) in 19 games in the fall.
