Louis Buckhalter

Bookman was an emigre to Ireland from Lithuania. He was the first Jew to gain International Association soccer honors (1911); Louis represented Ireland against England in the Amateur International, and also played against Wales and Scotland. In 1921, he played for Ireland against Scotland in the British Championship, starting at outside right (Scotland won the match, 2-0). Also an outstanding cricket player, Bookman played that sport for Leinster and Railway Union and for Ireland in the 1920s.

Career Highlights:
Born in Lithuania, Bookman changed his name to Bookman from Buckhalter and became a famous Irish soccer and cricket player. As a professional soccer player, Bookman played for Bradford City and Luton Town (in England) prior to World War I. He also played as an international, winning four caps (appearances) for Ireland in the 1910s and early 1920s. During this time, Ireland only played England, Scotland, and Wales in international competition.
