Levi, Baroness Maud Rosenbaum

The Chicago-born Maud Rosenbaum married an Italian Baron and moved to Italy in 1927, where she held the Italian singles championship from 1927-29. While in Rome, the Baroness also coached Italian Olympic women track athletes. She then returned to the United States in 1930 to play the tennis circuit in America.

Career Highlights:
Returning to the USA in 1930 to play the tennis circuit, Maud reached the semi-finals of the national championships in her first apperance there. According to the encyclopedia of JEWS in sports, "The Baroness made headlines prior to the 1935 national championships when she accused the USLTA of deliberate discrimination in not seeding her." Despite her No. 5 American ranking, she was paired in the first round against defending champion Helen Jacobs, to whom she lost the match 6-3, 6-4.
