Englander played at Yale with his 1955 Jewish classmate Les Pollack; together, they were ranked #15 nationally in junior doubles. Alan later competed at Forest Hills.

Career Highlights:
One of the top high school tennis players in New York in the early 1950s, the left-handed Englander competed for Mamaroneck High School (located on Long Island). In 1951, he was the No. 1 seeded when he lost in the final of the Eastern Interscholastic championship to future classmate Les Pollack. Then, in December of that same year, as a Yale freshman, Englander reached the semifinals of the Eastern junior indoor championships.

In 1954, Englander was seeded No. 5 at the Eastern intercollegiate championship and reached the quarterfinals. That summer, he was a member of a joint Harvard-Yale team that toured England and defeated a dual Cambridge-Oxford tennis team for the Prestice Cup -- Englander won both his singles and doubles matches.
