Griani, Moshe

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Griani was part of the fabulous Maccabi Netanya attack that struck fear into opponents hearts alongside David Lavi and Oded Machness. During this time, Moshe also played regularly for Israel and appeared in nine games for the Israeli National team.

At the age of 15, Griani moved from Tiberias to Netanya and was immidiately recognized as a formidable talent. In 1977-78, he played an active part for the Diamonds. Netanya won the championship, the State Cup and the European Inter-toto cup (the only Israeli team to do so). Griani's well taken goal in the final game is one for the ages.

In 1980, Griani was hugely influential playing behind scorers Machness and Lavi, and he registered 10 assists as Maccabi raced to the title. Two seasons later, the Diamonds scored numerous goals, and at every opportunity, annihilated opponents by as many as five or six points. But they lacked the consistency needed to secure the title and finished second. Netanya won the title the following year, but Griani missed much of that season due to a severe injury.

After Griani enjoyed a brief, but memorable, tenure at Brighton of England's top division, he joined Maccabi Tel Aviv at the start of the 1985-86 season. That year, he scored six goals as Maccabi came in third. They reached the same position in 1986-86 and this time Griani scored four goals. Over the next two years, Griani's contribution diminished and Maccabi as a team got progressively worse.
