Gamliel competed in two events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics: the 5000-meter and the 10,000-meter. In the shorter event, Arie was in the top three at the 1000-, 2000-, and 3000-meter marks. He fell back by the 4000-meter mark to finish in tenth place with a time of 14:02.98; he missed qualifying for the final by 12 seconds. In the 10,000-meter, Gamliel also finished in tenth place (29:31.32). Only the top five from the heat advanced the final.

Career Highlights:
One of Israel's greatest distance runners ever, Gamliel held two national records during his illustrious career in the 1980s. As of June 2002, he still held the 10,000-meter record and was among the national top ten in distances from 1,500-meters to the marathon.

In June 1981, Arie broke the national 3,000-meter record with a time of 7:55.7 (still second all-time) and the following month he ran what would become the second-fastest 1500-meter race in Israeli history with a time of 3:43.6 (missing the record by 0.3 seconds); at the present, Gamliel's mark is fifth all-time.

In 1984, Gamliel broke the 10,000-meter record with a time of 28:42.9 (still No.1 by almost 14 seconds), and ran 13:43.04 in the 5,000-meter, still the second-best time by an Israeli runner. Four years later, Arie ran the London Marathon in a time of 2:23:35.
